Austin American-Statesman is looking for its next Mobile/Breaking News Reporter, this is not a “morning cops” position. This job is about online engagement and delivering a high level of reporting and response to news in addition to helping grow our online audience. The ideal candidate is smart, resourceful, and not only has solid reporting and writing skills, but also is competitive, quick and understands the urgency and concept of online-first.
This reporter’s chief responsibility is to ensure that the Austin American-Statesman’s digital products are continuously updated with the latest local breaking news, with a specific emphasis on mobile presentation.
Be first: Break news as accurately, concisely and quickly as possible, then build on initial reports by adding as many details and updates as necessary.
Be flexible: Regularly cover public safety, weather and traffic, but be able to jump in and write about breaking news of any kind (state politics, education, courts, business, etc.).
Be ready to multitask: Be prepared to take photographs, shoot video, tweet and write text on deadline for any field assignment.
Think mobile: Improve mobile presentation with SEO-friendly web headlines, strong visuals, summarizing story highlights, and collaborate with online producers regarding placement of content.
Use digital tools for coverage and promotion: Be fluent in social media platforms as a way of not only following news but also as a means of reporting the news and promoting our content; be comfortable producing video at live events using apps such as Facebook Live and Videolicious; regularly interact with audiences during live coverage – whether it’s on Twitter or other digital social platforms – in an informative, professional way.
Be visual: Have video and other visual content (photos, graphics) constantly at front of mind, and ensure that staff and user-submitted video are pushed to online.
Develop sources: Foster relationships within the emergency response and public safety communities to keep informed of developing and breaking news.
Write quick-hit stories for the web: Ensure the Statesman web site has fresh or updated content; merge multiple sources of reporting into web updates; develop breaking updates for the print edition as news unfolds.
Coordinate coverage for planned events: Write preview stories for the web before undertaking live coverage of events such as protests, festivals, public meetings and news conferences. This includes routinely coordinating coverage with other departments for photos, promotion on social media, or using online tools or interactives.
Collaborate on livecoverage: Work closely with photo and video managers, as well as the social media editor and content producers to direct live coverage and engage web audiences.Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Daily newspaper experience preferred
- Must own or have reliable access to a car in good working order and have or be eligible for a Texas Driver’s License and insurance.
- Requires the ability to work non-traditional hours
- Some work may be required in either an industrial environment including noise, ink and heavy machinery or warehouse-like locations.
- Local travel is required.
- Out of town travel is required 15 % of the time.
- Physical demands and essential physical abilities include: a combination of physical work (standing, walking, lifting and carrying items such as laptop computers, pulling file drawers.
