The Telephone Sales Representative is responsible for effectively servicing and selling advertising to private individuals and non-contract advertisers over the phone while contributing to the overall revenue goals of the classified advertising department. This individual not only receives and processes a large volume of incoming sales calls, but is also responsible for making outbound calls to solicit advertising and sell special features/pages as directed by group sales initiatives. This individual provides customers with accurate rates, deadlines, copy suggestions, acceptance standards and policies for multiple categories and multiple advertising products as needed. This individual interacts and communicates extensively with customers and employees from other departments, supervisors and co-workers using effective communication skills, good judgment and sound decision-making.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS AND CRITERIA:
  • Answers large volume of incoming calls for classified ad placement, performing order entry, assisting customers with composing ad copy, advising customer on multiple advertising opportunities as it pertains to customer’s needs, while providing excellent customer service.
  • Provides excellent service to internal and external customers by courteously and effectively fulfilling requests, providing assistance, addressing concerns and solving problems in a timely, professional manner which includes but is not limited to cancellations, corrections, and complaints pertaining to advertisements.
  • Actively participates in sales initiatives; meets or exceeds established performance standards and goals.
  • Maintains and exhibits a consistently positive and professional attitude with customers, co-workers, and management.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the company using sensitivity, tact and sound judgment.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and effectively to changing priorities and environment. 
  • Effectively organizes workday to maximize productivity by utilizing proper time management techniques to ensure high level of responsiveness to internal and external needs.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Ability to accept coaching and constructive feedback on performance from management
  • Must be able to work overtime as required and be able to work in any other company location as needed.
  • Follows all established company safety policies and procedures and ensures personal work environment is free of hazards.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of departmental and company objectives by performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • A minimum of 2 years responsible work experience in a Customer Service, Office-Clerical, or Sales role required.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read, write and speak English clearly, effectively and concisely with customers, employees, supervisors/management, and co-workers.
  • Possess excellent grammar, spelling, and word comprehension skills.
  • Computer savvy, technically literate with the ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm accurately.
  • Possess a good telephone voice.
  • Ability to use Wintext/Atex Order Entry System.
  • Ability to calculate complex rates/discounts and correctly interpret a wide variety of sales programs.
  • Ability to recognize and correct spelling and grammatical errors to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of customer’s advertisements.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and effectively to changing priorities and environment. 
  • Ability to effectively and promptly handle multiple tasks on a daily basis under deadline constraints and in an open work environment with frequent distractions.
  • Ability to identify problems, seek out available resources, communicate needs to appropriate departments and follow through on projects to completion.
  • Possess a good telephone voice.
  • Ability to hear and listen to; and understand employees, customers and managers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel, including outside vendors via the telephone, correspondence and in person.
  • Must be able to compose original correspondence, recognize and correct spelling and grammatical errors, follow technical manuals and have professional contact with people. 
  • Ability to represent the Classified Advertising department and the company in a professional manner, in behavior and appearance.

Preferred

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Advertising, Communications, Business or related field of study.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, PC Windows environment, and the Internet.
  • Previous Sales experience.
  • Experience within the newspaper industry.
  • Ability to speak fluent Spanish, preferred but not required
